Heading Toward Hurricane Season
Wither Weather
?

As we proceed into the hurricane season, one of the most valuable tools is a reliable and accurate source of weather information. While we each seem to have our own preferred source, it may prove prudent to have some others to consult.

Let’s start with the local weather forecast office of the National Weather Service. Here in the Houston area that would be the Houston/Galveston Office located in Dickinson: www.srh.noaa.gov/hgx/

Our local newspaper is the Houston Chronicle and the Houston area weather forecast site can be found at:
weather.chron.com/US/TX/Houston.html

Each of our local media broadcast outlets may also have a dedicated online site. Your mileage may vary.

EMWIN Houston – Broadcasting the NWS Emergency Managers Weather Information Network in southeast Texas can be found at:
houston.emwin.org/

An interesting Houston Radar Matrix site composite screen can be found at: home.earthlink.net/~houstonweather/houston/radarmatrix.htm

There are several non-governmental private weather services with online information. One of particular interest to us here in the Houston area is found at:
www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/Summary.aspx?enlarge=true&location=USTX1200

Some more useful hurricane specific sites may be found as follows:

The National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center site is: www.nhc.noaa.gov/index.shtml

They also have an Atlantic Graphical Tropical Weather Outlook page at: www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo_atl.shtml

Currently you may find the Naval Maritime Forecast Center – Norfolk at: www.nlmoc.navy.mil/home1.html

This site is being reconfigured and may change at any time.Storm track can be seen at: www.thestormtrack.com/

Weather Underground’s Tropical Weather site is: www.wunderground.com/tropical/

University Corporation for Atmospheric Research’s site RAP Real-Time Weather Data is: www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/

Plymouth State University’s Weather Center is located at: vortex.plymouth.edu/

A final site of hurricane specific interest is the South Florida Water Management District’s hurricane plot area which can be found at:
my.sfwmd.gov/portal/page?_pageid=3194,21328260,3194_21169354:3194_21260388:3194_21260861&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

Hopefully we will not need any of these sites for this year’s hurricane season (or any in the future?)

That concludes tonight’s training. Are there any questions, comments or suggested additions to this material?

Thanks, this is (callsign) clear to net control.
